Vinegar and Sin

How do you teach your children the story of Easter?

Sin.
An innocent Man.
A Savior who came to Redeem us.
Resurrection.
LIFE!

In order to explain the message of the Cross to my little punks I use vinegar, salt and very dirty pennies.

I begin explaining to my littles that sin is anything we do that keeps us from being friends with God.  “Sin” is the bad and yucky things we do. (I realize that’s a very basic statement, but my kids are little)

Then I bring out some very dirty pennies and tell them the dirt on the penny is like their sin.

In a small bowl, I mix ¼ cup of white vinegar and 1 Tablespoon of salt.

Stir.

Place the pennies in the vinegar mixture for about five minutes.

I suggest you try this alone first, so you can gauge how long it will take the penny to become shinny, you may need to adjust the time up or down by a few minutes.

They will come out shiny and clean!

I explain that Jesus can make our hearts shiny and clean if we ask Him to forgive us.

We celebrate Good Friday because Jesus died on the cross for our sins!

I end by having them repeat a little prayer of forgiveness and thankfulness for what Jesus did on the cross!

Welcome Spring

Hooray for Spring and new life!

I highly recommend buying a Butterfly Garden, you can find the kits at most nature stores or from Insect Lore.   Once we purchased the kit, we ordered the caterpillars online from Insect Lore and they came to us within a few days.  Watching them change and grow was fun for our entire family.  My older kids knew about the life cycle of a butterfly, but to actually watch it take place in front of their eyes was more than incredible.

I know for a fact we’ll be ordering new caterpillars again shortly!

The kids and I also went to the library and checked out great butterfly books which we read over and over at home:

→  My, Oh My A Butterfly by Dr. Seuss

→  I’m a Caterpillar

→  The Very Hungry Caterpillar

→  Born to Be a Butterfly

What a fun way to welcome Spring into our home.

Happy Monday!

Mom’s Heart Online

A new website is launching today: Mom Heart Online.

It’s an online community of Sally Clarkson.  If you’ve read any of her books, you’d know how incredibly awesome she is!

If you’ve never read any of Sally’s books I suggest

→ this one

and

→ this one

you will most likely love any book she writes, guaranteed.

Mom’s Heart Online is going to be a place any mom can come to be encouraged, equipped, and enabled as a mother after God’s heart – pretty awesome huh?!

If you’re a mother you might want to click on over and get encouraged!

I know I will  :)

You can follow them on Twitter as well →  Mom’s Heart Online.

Tips for the park

We love the park!

The sunshine.

The fresh air.

Exercise.

Socialization.

When I go to the park during the week, I bring all four kids by myself and it’s totally doable….no really it is.

Here are a few tips that help me:

→  I go to the park early in the day – not as hot – not as crowded

→  I bring snacks (sometimes even lunch)

→  Only go to parks with a bathroom

→  Bring a stroller (even if no one sits in it, I use the stroller as a hub to hold all our stuff)

→  Bring a front pack or sling (in addition to the stroller)

→  Give yourself options (frisbee, a ball, a blanket to sit on, chalk, or sand toys)

→  I always bring extra diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes

→  If one child goes potty, EVERYONE goes potty

→  Bring water in sippy cups to avoid drinking fountain play

→  Leave before meltdowns happen

And the best tip I have for a fun day at the park is:
Over prepare, then go with the flow!

Happy Monday!

The Power Green

Here is a delicious {and nutritious} smoothie we’ll be enjoying on March 17th!  Happy {Early} St. Patrick’s Day.

Green Smoothie from Two Peas & Their Pod

Bottoms up!

1 large orange, peeled and segmented
1/2 of a large banana, cut into chunks
6 large strawberries
2 cups spinach
1/3 cup plain yogurt
1 cup ice (optional)

Directions:

1. Put all of the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve.

Enjoy!

3-2-1-Blast Off

We made rockets this morning, they were fun and quite simple.

MATERIALS:

TP Roll
Glue
Foil
Construction paper (or cardstock)
Paint
Markers

Here’s how we made it!

  1. Paint your TP roll.
  2. Cut out a circle from your cardstock and paint it (or use colored construction paper).
  3. Cut two long strips out of foil.
  4. Make a small slit in circle and gently fold it around so it looks like the top of a cone.  Tape or glue sides together.
  5. Glue top of rocket onto TP roll.
  6. Glue the strips of foil on the bottom.
  7. Color long oval-type shapes for the flames and cut out.
  8. Glue onto the bottom of rocket on the inside of the TP roll.
  9. Now SMILE and say that was easy!

Crepes

I was feeling rather adventuresome (and bored) the other day so I made crepes for me and the little punks! They turned out really well, my son and I stuffed ours with nutella and bananas, my daughters just wanted theirs plain (…weird) but either way, we all enjoyed them!
